ART DECO

Art Deco is a highly decorative style that reached its height of influence in the 1920s and 30s, impacting on all aspects of design, from architecture to the simplest household objects.

The best Art Deco pieces can be so unusual and creative that they stand alone as objects of art.

As furniture makers we have been particularly inspired by the French designer Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann, who is considered to be the most important interior and furniture designer of French Art Deco style.  Most of his pieces now stand in museums as national treasures.

We, at Bainbridge Fine Furniture, are totally committed to reproducing Ruhlmann's celebrated vision faithfully to his stringent standards. We source the finest, exotic, book-matched veneers finished in French lacquers to created pieces of unsurpassed quality.

Art Deco has a sophisticated, timeless quality that complements both traditional and contemporary interiors.

BIEDERMEIER

Biedermeier’s simple architectural designs were a reaction against the opulent interiors favoured by the German bourgeoisie. Although it is assumed that the furniture was made for the masses, it was in fact, highly skillful cabinetry, and thus was only accessible to the privileged classes.

Biedermeier furniture typically features classic architectural lines with pediments and columns, showcasing beautifully veined and patterned veneers. The lyre is a popular element, while drawers have locks and keys rather than decorative pulls.

We believe we are the only makers of Biedermeier furniture in Australia using traditional techniques.

You will find our Beidermeier furniture indistinguishable from the originals.

SHAKER

Originating from the Shaker communities of 18th Century America, Shaker furniture, in its simplicity, reflects their virtous lifestyle.

In striving for perfection on earth the Shakers have left us with a lasting testament to their industry, in the shape of their furniture. By striping away unnecessary ornament and condemning beauty for beauty’s sake, the Shakers ironically produced some of the most beautiful furniture.

By concentrating on form and function they were probably 150 years ahead of their time; the precursors to the modern movement.

Shaker style makes up for its lack of ornamentation by using fine timbers and traditional methods of joinery, including dovetails and wooden pegged joints.

At Bainbrige Fine Furniture, we use these same time-honoured methods to faithfully reproduce Shaker pieces of exceptional quality.

CONTEMPORARY

Today's modern furniture takes it's influences from all of the above styles.  However construction techniques dictate most of today's style.  The use of pre-prepared boards has lead to a simplifying of shapes to cubes and vertical and horizontal elements.  Furniture now blends into the surroundings.  This has not dampend creativity though, other elements such as glass, leather, paint and metals etc. have been used to add a new artistic element to furniture.
